Kazakhstan's No. 1 and world's No. 10 Elena Rybakina has been nominated for the prestigious international sports award for 2022 in the «Breakthrough of the year» category.

Elena Rybakina, the champion of Wimbledon 2022 and finalist of the Australian Open 2023 has become a nominee for the Laureus World Sports Award. This award annually recognizes athletes in seven categories for outstanding achievements in the previous year. The Laureus World Sports Awards was established in 1999.
Determining the winners is a two-step process. First, a selection panel of respected sports editors, journalists and commentators from nearly 80 countries vote and short-list the candidates in each category. The voting process is overseen by independent auditors from PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP. Laureus World Sports Academy members then select the winners by secret ballot.
Each winner receives a Laureus statuette, exclusively donated by Cartier jewelry. This 2.5 kilogram figure contains 670 grams of silver and 650 grams of gold.
Throughout the history of the award, a tennis athlete has been the most awarded one. Roger Federer has won the «Athlete of the Year» award four times in a row (2005-2008). He is also the only athlete to have won the nomination five times in the history of the Laureus World Sports Awards (one more award in 2018)

Of the tennis players in the same category, Novak Djokovic was honored four times and Rafael Nadal won it twice. Serena Williams was named the «Female Athlete of the Year» four times with Naomi Osaka winning it once.

Federer, Nadal and Williams each won the «Comeback of the Year» statuette once.

Nadal, Andy Murray, Osaka and Amelie Moresmo were among the winners in the «Breakthrough of the Year» category once each.
