Timofey Skatov Finishes as Runner-up at Shymkent Challenger
The opening installment of the back-to-back ATP Challenger 50 tournaments in Shymkent concluded today with the singles final. Top seed Timofey Skatov of Kazakhstan (World No. 198) fell short in the title match, conceding to Uzbekistan’s Sergey Fomin (World No. 359).
The match was played under clear skies and 28-degree heat. Fomin established an early lead by maintaining consistency from the baseline, allowing him to claim the first set 6:3. In the second set, Skatov managed to find his rhythm, leading to a closely contested battle that remained leveled at 5-5. However, the 25-year-old Fomin capitalized on his opportunities in the final games, securing a crucial break to close out the match 7:5.
This encounter marked the first head-to-head meeting between the two players on the professional tour. For Sergey Fomin, a bronze medalist at the 2021 Universiade, this victory marks his second career ATP Challenger title, following his maiden win in Kuwait in 2022.
Professional tennis continues in Shymkent without a break, as the main draw for the second ATP Challenger 50 event is set to begin tomorrow, running through May 3.
