Amir Omarkhanov: «It’s Special moment»
Kazakhstan’s Amir Omarkhanov made his ATP main draw debut today at the Almaty Open ATP 250 , putting up a spirited fight before falling to seventh-seeded and the finalist of the 2024 edition Gabriel Diallo of Canada 6-3, 6-4 in the opening round.
Despite the loss, the young Kazakh impressed with his aggressive baseline game and composure against one of the ATP Tour’s rising players, drawing strong support from the home crowd throughout the contest. The match marked an important milestone in Omarkhanov’s young career, as he competed on home soil in Kazakhstan’s ATP 250 tournament. His debut in Almaty not only showcased his potential but also reflected the growing depth and ambition of **Kazakh tennis**, as the country continues to build momentum on the global stage.
After the match, Omarkhanov reflected on the emotions of playing at home, the challenges of stepping up from the ITF circuit to the ATP level, and the lessons he hopes to take into future events.
Q: Well done today. How does it feel to be competing at home in your first ATP 250 tournament?
A: Thank you. It’s definitely a mix of emotions — both on and off the court. Seeing other players practice and compete here, and being part of this event for the first time, especially at home, feels really special. No matter how it ends, it’s a very positive experience for me. I’m happy to play here and proud to represent my country.
Q: It’s a big jump from juniors and ITF events to the ATP level. Its happening too fast ?
A: Yeah, it’s completely different — the level, the approach, the facilities, everything. It’s a big step up, but it’s also a great challenge. I’m learning a lot and trying to adapt as quickly as I can.
Q: You faced last year’s finalist today. What positives do you take from that match?
A: It was a tough one, for sure. I haven’t had a full chat with my coaches yet, but we’ll go over the match and see what I could have done better. The goal is to learn from it and bring those improvements into the next matches. I had great support from the crowd, and that really helped me stay positive.
Q: This was your first time facing a top-50 opponent. What’s your biggest takeaway from that experience?
A: That's right — it was my first time playing someone at that level. The biggest thing I noticed is how consistently they create pressure. You don’t get many chances in rallies, and when you do, you have to take them. So we’ll work on that — moving better, serving better, returning better. There’s a lot of room for improvement, and this match gave me a good sense of what to focus on.
