Excitement is building in Almaty, with less than two days remaining until the start of main draw play at this year’s Almaty Open, an ATP 250. Top players and tournament officials gathered at the stunning Abay Restaurant on Kok Tobe mountain with players, who arrived by cable car, enjoying one of the most scenic views in the region.

The draw for the 28–player men’s singles field was revealed, with three local wild cards learning their first-round opponents.

Beibit Zhukayev, ranked 215, will face sixth-seeded American Alex Michelsen. Zhukayev will look to build on last year’s success in Almaty. He reached his first ATP quarterfinal, where he fell to this year’s top seed, Karen Khachanov.

Amir Omarkhanov will square off with last year’s runner-up Gabriel Diallo, the seventh-seeded Canadian. 17-year-old Omarkhanov, a Karaganda native, has been as high as No.4 in the ITF junior rankings and is thought to be a future star for Kazakhstan.

24-year-old Timofey Skatov, ranked 233, was drawn to face Chile’s Nioclas Jarry. Skatov was beaten by Tomas Machac in first-round action last year and enters this year’s event in good form. Skatov won a challenger title in Todi, Italy in August, which included a win over this year’s Shanghai Masters finalist Valentin Vacherot in the semifinals.

Additionally, Alexander Shevchenko, one of two quarterfinals from Kazakhstan at last year’s event, will face Laslo Djere in the first-round, with the winner facing either eighth-seeded Corentin Moutet or a qualifier.

Shevchenko, ranked No.89, is the highest-ranked player in action for the host nation this year in Almaty.

Each of the top four seeds – Khachanov, Daniil Medvedev, Flavio Cobolli and Luciano Darderi – will receive byes into the second round.

Top-seeded Khachanov will face either Jan-Lennard Struff or Mackenzie McDonald in his second-round match. Second-seeded Medvedev, who is currently playing the semifinals at the Shanghai Masters, will face either Tristan Schoolkate or Adam Walton.

Other enticing first-round matchups include Arthur Cazaux vs Shintaro Mochizuki, Brandon Nakashima vs Hamad Medjedovic and Fabian Marozsan vs Luca Nardi.

Main draw action kicks off on Monday October 13th, with the final to be played on Sunday October 19th.
